Be Yourself
In Matthew 16:13-16, Jesus asks his disciples who people though he was. Some say you are John the Baptist, others say you are Elijah, others, Jeremiah and still others one of the prophets, they said. Jesus then asks their opinion, and Peter shoots up and reveals that he was the Christ, an answer Jesus commended, pointing it as true revelation from heaven.
Two important lessons from this verses:
I) Everyone has an opinion of you based on their past experiences, most of which is usually wrong. To compare Jesus to John, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets who were all mortal men, was to grossly underestimate who Christ was- God incarnate. When you don’t know who you are, people will tell you who they think you are, and expect you to live by the standards they set for you. Unfortunately some of those expectations can be way below who you ought to be
2) Your true identity, purpose and value can only be discovered and revealed from heaven. Men teach from past experiences, and can only compare you to the past, but God has unleashed you in this earth for the future. you are the future, refuse to be a prisoner of yesterday’s imagination, and begin to imagine your own future
